Our Williamsburg or Richmond Virginia offices are seeking an on-call Project Archaeologist. The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting with the management of archaeological projects and staff and will be based in either the Williamsburg or Richmond, Virginia, office. Responsibilities include managerial tasks associated with archaeological assessments and Phase I, II, and III excavations, writing technical reports, and assisting Project Managers/Principal Investigators with field projects. The position requires work in the field and office, as well as travel on a project by project basis. Supervise activities of all field personnel and assign, direct, and evaluate their work.  Maintain daily paperwork, field maps, notes, photographs, vehicles, and field equipment. Must have a valid driver’s license and be legally eligible to work in the United States.  Must have exceptionally strong writing and verbal communication skills and the ability to manage numerous projects and coordinate with staff in local and remote locations.

Your Duties

  • Field Personnel Management, coordination
  • Application of working knowledge of goals and strategies in Phase I, II, and III archaeological investigations
  • Keeping Project Manager apprised of progress and/or problems, as necessary
  • Co-author on Phase I, II, and III reports
  • Contributor to negotiation documents, treatment plans, avoidance plans or other planning documents
  • Contributor to proposals, budget estimates, and other marketing efforts
  • Extensive travel may be required
  • Excellent excavation skills
  • Participate occasionally at Public Meetings, such as Planning Commission or Town Hall meetings

Your Capabilities and Credentials

 

  • Knowledge of Phase I, II, and III archaeological excavations/assessments
  • Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions
  • Knowledge of Section 106 compliance
  • Independent research and problem solving skills
  • Basic identification skills for prehistoric and historic materials
  • Ability to effectively supervise entire project team
  • Ability to remain current with Agency protocol for conducting cultural resources work in various localities
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to use field data collection equipment such as GPS, transit, and Total Station
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Ability to make knowledgeable decisions in the field in the absence of a Project Manager

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • MA or MS degree in anthropology or archaeology or closely related field
  • Must meet Secretary of Interior Standard for Principal Investigator
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) designation a plus
  • At least 1 season of a field school
  • Section 106 training; will be provided if not previously completed
  • Virginia and Mid-Atlantic region experience a plus
